 EASTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT

OPENING REMARKS BY THE MEC FOR SPORT, ARTS AND CULTURE, NOSIMO BALINDLELA

AT THE ANN BRYANT EXHIBITION OPENING

11 NOVEMBER 1999

Master of Ceremonies, Ladies and Gentleman good evening.

I feel honoured to address this august gathering of women artists in this Art Gallery aptly named " After that Stalwart Ann Bryant" who was
also a woman.

This coming Millenium Master of Ceremonies, ladies and Gentleman has great challenges for our women for, "Women have what it takes to make
it to the top". Women have in recent years assumed leadership positions in the private sector and also in government holding executive
posts, as chairpersons of organisations and also investment corporations. They have distinguished themselves in the Business sector and
many have achieved great accolades like Business Women of the Year Awards.

I wish to salute the role that government has played in encouraging women to show their abilities and also their creativity. I am aware
that inadequate funding is an obstacle which is encountered by artists in our country. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture however,
is committed in assisting women, rural communities, the aged and people with disabilities in projects that will ensure that they are
economically independent. You may be aware that through the ECPACC (Eastern Cape Provincial Arts and Culture Council) the government assist
communities, associations and organisations with development projects in the Arts and Culture. We hope that these communities will benefit
economically with the establishment of the Spatial Development Initiatives and Cultural villages in the Eastern Cape.

In closing Master of Ceremonies I wish to plead with our artists that:

1. They must products that are of quality and of international standards.
2. They must develop and fine tune their marketing strategies for the products they produce
3. Develop their business skills and most importantly
4. To speak with authority when dealing with financial institution so that these institution can realise that they are dealing with a
group of artists that are knowledgeable of their vocation.

This will build confidence and trust in them and be assured that they can fund their projects with the realisation that their funds will be
properly administered.

Ladies and Gentlemen allow me to declare this Exhibition officially openend.
